Road Conditions to Palmerston Beach - April 2, 2018

The Holberg Road was in decent condition until Nahwitti Lake. From Nahwitti Lake until the NE 60 turnoff the road is muddy with a lot of potholes. From the NE 60 turn until Holberg there are active logging trucks in both directions and the road is rough, narrow and hasn't been graded for a bit. There was no snow or ice on the road.

Leaving Holberg on San Jo Main there are lots of deep potholes and muddy/loose conditions. We would not recommend a low clearance vehicle currently on this stretch of road. There are active logging trucks coming from Strandby Main and Ronning Main. The road from the Raft Cove parking lot until Palmerston Beach has some very deep pot holes and large puddles.

Road Conditions to Raft Cove - March 11, 2018

March 11 Joli 2.jpg

Our good friends headed out to Raft Cove yesterday and sent us an update on the road conditions.

From the Port Hardy turn-off to Holberg the road was mostly in really good shape, 75% hard-packed and pothole free and there was snow on the side of road at higher elevations. The section from Nahwitti Lake to Holberg was a rougher, but not terrible.

The road from Holberg to Raft Cove was mostly in rough shape, had more potholes than not, was wet & muddy with the section along the Goodspeed River being particularly wet.

They also spotted a bear, so keep your eyes peeled as you head out exploring. We hope that you all have had a chance to enjoy some of this beautiful, North Island weather!

winter road conditions to san josef bay

We headed out to San Josef Bay for the day and have updated our road report. Between Port Hardy and Holberg the road is covered in snow and slush. We were in a large pickup truck with studded snow tires and still found it to be slippery. Be very cautious when heading out on this road during winter conditions.

Beyond Holberg the roads were clear of snow and areas were freshly graded. On San Jo Main near the trail head parking lot there are a LOT of potholes. On the drive home we ran into snow south of Holberg until the turn-off to Port Hardy.

We are launching the Pothole Patrol!

In an effort to make travel easy and safe to the west coast we are going to be posting the road conditions that we encounter. We have found that the road conditions to Cape Scott Provincial Park & San Josef Bay (and all of the beaches beyond Holberg) are constantly changing, and at times can be quite treacherous without a properly equipped vehicle and some local knowledge.

During the winter we will update this at least once a month, and during the spring & summer we will be updating it weekly. Feel free to contact us anytime with questions on road conditions and travel to the west coast.

Last week the road to Holberg had some really nice & freshly graded sections and also had some sections with lots of potholes.

There is active hauling with loaded fat trucks heading towards Holberg right now from 15k on North East 60. Please be cautious and carry a VHF radio if possible.
